Are you lonely? (Professionally I mean...)
By Zoe McAlpine, Executive Coach
Do you find business leadership lonely? I hear you.
Well-known phrases like "The price of leadership is loneliness." and "The higher you go, the lonelier it becomes." exist for a reason.
And the sense of isolation in leadership is more common than many might admit.
Leadership can feel amazing, but at times it’s a solitary journey. Whether you’re a CEO—especially one without a ‘complete’ executive team—or a business owner trying to balance the demands of wearing many hats, the challenges of leadership can feel overwhelming. It can often feel like the responsibility sits on your shoulders, and that no one else really understands the pressure.
The ongoing demand to lead and deliver can sometimes leave you feeling like you’re navigating uncharted waters alone, and that ‘only you’ can sort everything out. If this resonates with you, I promise that you're not alone.
The Loneliness of Leadership
It's a reality that many leaders face but few talk about. When you're “at the top”, who do you turn to? Yes, there might be a board of directors or a team of managers, but are they truly able to understand your unique challenges?
· Board members often have limited time and they simply can’t be “hands on”. And at times, like you, they might be ‘too close’ to the organisation or the challenge, when what you really need is a fresh perspective.
· Managers are often looking to you for guidance, rather than being in a position to act as a peer you can confide in. And at times what you need to discuss may be the very thing you can’t share.
For CEOs and business owners who don't have an executive team around them, the feelings of isolation can be especially strong. You're expected to do it all—tick every box, have all the answers, be the visionary.
But what happens when you need advice? What about when you need someone to challenge your thinking or help you see things from a different perspective?
Who Do You Rumble With?
The concept of "rumbling" something I thank Brene Brown for, and is one I often talk about with my clients. It’s about putting everything on the table, workshopping the challenges, asking the hard questions, and digging deep into the issues that really matter, to figure out ways forward. But who do you rumble with when you're the one in charge? Who can you safely bounce ideas off without worrying what they might think?
This is where the value of having an Executive Coach can be extraordinarily helpful. A Coach provides a safe space for leaders to explore their thoughts, challenge their assumptions, and test their ideas. It's about exploring different perspectives and helping you explore what the pathways, next steps and solutions might be. A Coach can be that sounding board you need, the person who asks the questions that no one else will, and the one who helps you stay accountable to your goals.
Bring Your Strategic Plan to Life
One of the biggest challenges leaders face is translating their vision into action. You might have a brilliant strategic plan, but then what? How do you bring it to life? How do you ensure your team is aligned, motivated, and equipped to execute the plan effectively?
This is another area where a Coach can help. A Coach can help you break down your strategic plan into actionable steps, identify potential roadblocks, and develop strategies to overcome them. They can also help you build the skills you need to lead your team through change, overcome resistance, and keep everyone focused on the big picture.
The Skills Every Manager Should Have
What are the skills you wish every manager had? Time and time again, I’ve seen how the most successful leaders (and organisations) are those who invest in the growth of their managers.
Leadership isn't just about setting the direction—it's also about empowering others to buy-in to and forge towards it together.
Communication, emotional intelligence, and decision-making are just a few of the key skills that are critical for effective management. A Coach can work with you to identify the skills gaps within your team and develop a plan to address them. Whether it's through one-on-one Coaching, group workshops, or tailored training programs, investing in your team's development will pay off.
The Executive Hustle
I’ve often heard life as an Executive described as a hustle. From my own experience as a CEO, this is true. There’s a constant juggling act between managing stakeholders, competing priorities, high expectations (even of self!), and the pressure to deliver results. But it doesn't have to be that way.
With the right support, you can navigate the hustle with confidence and clarity. A Coach is someone you can talk to outside of your organisation, who has been there and gets it. Someone who can help you get clear on your priorities, AND grow your leadership skills.
As an Executive Coach, I've worked with leaders across various industries from many different walks of life. It’s my job (and privilege) to help people thrive in their roles and lead successful organisations.
If you’re ready to step out of the loneliness and become a thriving leader, I would love to help.
